چکیده

Multiple dates of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery were analyzed to compare a decade of forest harvest activity in northern Maine’s industrial forest. Unsupervised clustering on three-date sequences of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index classified the harvest type and time period when change occurred. Problematic clusters were reclassified using the Normalized Difference Moisture Index, which improved the detection of light partial harvests. The procedure classified clearcuts and partial cuts in all time periods with at least 80% agreement with 250 reference sample points. Patch characteristics of the harvest areas revealed a shift from large clearcuts in the late 1980s and early 1990s to fewer and smaller clearcuts in the middle to late 1990s. By the late 1990s, large clearcuts (>40 ha) were eliminated, and partial cuts increased in size. Partial cuts affected more land area than did clearcuts in all time periods. Comparison of harvest patches between the two largest landowners in the study area revealed significant differences in the number and distance between clearcut harvest areas. The trends in decreasing clearcut harvesting practices over the past decade appear to have been influenced by forestry legislation, according to the results of this study and an independent report by the Maine Forest Service. The changing harvest patterns on the landscape were detectable on time-series satellite imagery. FOR. SCI. 49 (3):341–353.

Forest Harvest Patterns on Private Lands in the Cascade Mountains, Washington, USA

Forests in Washington State generate substantial economic revenue from commercial timber harvesting on private lands. To investigate the rates, causes, and spatial and temporal patterns of forest harvest on private tracts throughout the Cascade Mountains, we relied on a new generation of annual land-use/land-cover (LULC) products created from the application of the Continuous Change Detection a...

Evaluating the Impact of Abrupt Changes in Forest Policy and Management Practices on Landscape Dynamics: Analysis of a Landsat Image Time Series in the Atlantic Northern Forest

Sustainable forest management is based on functional relationships between management actions, landscape conditions, and forest values. Changes in management practices make it fundamentally more difficult to study these relationships because the impacts of current practices are difficult to disentangle from the persistent influences of past practices. Within the Atlantic Northern Forest of Main...

Application of Artificial Neural Network in Landscape Change Process in Gharesou Watershed, Golestan Province

Land use change is certainly the most important factor that affects the conservation of natural ecosystems, resulting the conversion of natural lands such as forests and pastures into agricultural, industrial and urban areas. Despite numerous studies investigating landscape patterns due to land use change, the driving forces of landscape change has been less studied in Iran. In this study, Arti...

Modeling the Relative Contributions of Land Use Change and Harvest to Forest Landscape Change in the Taihe County, China

Forests are under pressure from land use change due to anthropogenic activities. Land use change and harvest are the main disturbances of forest landscape changes. Few studies have focused on the relative contributions of different disturbances. In this study, we used the CA-Markov model, a land-use change model, coupled with a forest landscape model, LANDIS-II, to simulate dynamic change in Ta...

Land use changes detection and spatial distribution using digital and satellite data, case study: Farim drainage basin, Northern of Iran

Land use change may influence many natural phenomena and ecological processes, including runoff, soil erosion, sedimentation and soil conditions. Decreasing of forest area in the North of Iran is one of the critical problems in recent years. The aims of this study are to detect land use changes between 1967 to 2002 using satellite images of Land Sat 7 ETM+ (2002), aerial photos and digital topo...
